Mrs. Altie Mae Page Hand, 96, resident of East 14th Street, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with David Parr, Larry Tarkington and Eddie Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Cemetery in Giles County. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Hand was the daughter of the late John W. Page and Margaret Hindman Page. She was born and raised in Giles County where she attended Liberty Hill School. In 1932 she married Lindsey Hand who preceded her in death in July of 1953. The couple moved to Columbia in 1936. Mrs. Hand worked in several areas during her life. She was a retired Floor Lady Supervisor at Dixie Manufacturing Co., owner/operator of Tennessee Gift Shop, owner/operator of the Vegetable Store, owned several rental properties, was a farmer, and owner/operator of the family farm in Giles County. She attended Primitive Baptist churches including the County Line Primitive Baptist Church in Giles County, Cool Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Franklin, and attended many other Primitive Baptist Associations for many years. She was a former member of Eastern Star Legion. She will be remembered for her love of the earth, soil, farming and vegetable gardening. She will be missed by her family, many friends and many customers. Survivors include two sisters, Vernise Page Carpenter of Nashville, Edythe Artell Page Smith of Winter Park, Florida and Columbia; two nieces, Jean Crumley Kelly of Columbia, Ruth Crumley Hughes of Gallatin; two nephews, Dewey (Christine) Carpenter of Nashville, James M. Rich, Jr. of Ft.Lauderdale, FL; several great nieces and great nephews; and several great-great nieces and great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Page Crumley and a brother, Raymond Page. Pallbearers will be Stanley Watson, James Watson, Ray Watson, James Rich, Jr. and Dewey Carpenter.
