Mrs. Ardena "Dena" Smith Hawkins, 90, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Life Care Center, Columbia, Tennessee. A prayer and memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Jacob, Rev. Melinda Britt and Rev. Jim Hughes officiating. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 2 - 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Bristol, Virginia native was the daughter of the late James Edward Smith and Rebecca Young Smith. She was a graduate of Wallace High School in Virginia. On April 29, 1939, she married Henry Robert Hawkins who preceded her in death on February 3, 1995. She was a member of Culpeper Baptist Church. Mrs. Hawkins was a homemaker and community volunteer. She was a founding member of Culpeper Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of Stevensburg Fellowship Club, Homemakers Extension Club in Culpeper, Culpeper Volunteer Fire Auxiliary and Culpeper Farm Show and Fair Organization. She was awarded the Ruritan Club Award for local community service. In 2005 she received the President's Call to Service Award given by the President's National Council on Service and Civic Participation and the National Community Service Council for making a difference through volunteer service in recognition of over 10,000 hours of service at Culpeper Regional Hospital. Dena was a porcelain artist. Her hobbies included flower arranging, crocheting, knitting, quilting, and basket weaving. While she was a resident at Life Care Center she enjoyed crocheting lap afghans for friends and family. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Rebecca Hawkins of Columbia; grandson, Robert Tracy Hawkins of Culpeper, VA; granddaughter, Whitney Ann Hawkins Thompson of Carrollton, VA; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert L. Hawkins, her daughter, Ann Kyle Hawkins and five brothers and sisters. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Life Care Center.
