Austin Odell Brewer, 91, founder and co-owner of Brewer Construction and Columbia Plastics, died Saturday, January 7, 2017 at his residence on Theta Pike. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Andrew Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Navy. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born August 30, 1925 in Logan County, Kentucky he was the son of the late Calvin William Brewer and Dena Pugh Brewer. On November 20, 1948, he married Mary Emelene Pinkleton Brewer who preceded him in death January 20, 2008. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. A well-known business man, together he and his brother developed Chantay Acres in Columbia along with commercial and residential developments in the Mid-South. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed playing golf, watching UT and Tennessee Titans football. He loved to sing, play the harmonica, and spend time with his family traveling and going to the lake. Mr. Brewer was a member of Graymere Church of Christ, the Lions Club, and Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. Survivors include his daughter, Sheila (Chuck) Brewer-Herr of South Lyon, Michigan; sons, Ray (Sherrie) Brewer of Columbia, and Randy (Donata) Brewer of Caledon-East Ontario, Canada; grandchildren, Natalie (Johnathon) Counts, Nicole Rowe, Nick (Lisa) Brewer, Jennifer Brewer, Cassie (Adam) Gutzman, Aaron (Katie) Potts, and Benton (Carolyn) Potts; great grandchildren, Jaylin Counts, Ethan Brewer, Eli Brewer, Sadie Potts, M.T. Potts, and Brant Gutzman; sisters, Maye Johnson, Faye Comp, and Laura White Parks; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Pinkleton. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Brewer; and sisters, Flora Burns Stone, Juanita Voss, and Virginia Dunn.Active pallbearers will be Chuck Herr, Nick Brewer, Ethan Brewer, Eli Brewer, Benton Potts, Aaron Potts, Jonathan Counts, and Scott Turner.
