Mrs. Ava Beckum McMeen, 76, retired seamstress and resident of Carters Creek Pike, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Columbia Care & Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Peery officiating. Burial will be in West Point Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to West Point Cemetery, c/o Doug Williams, 206 Carters Creek Pike, Columbia, TN 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late James Thomas Beckum and Naomi "Betty" Lindsey Beckum. She was devoted to her husband of 60 years, Monroe McMeen of Columbia who she married on December 13, 1947. She loved working jigsaw puzzles, gardening, canning and cooking for friends and family who loved her fried chicken. Mrs. McMeen loved her church family at West Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for over 35 years. In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, Larry (Jackie) McMeen, David (Mary Jo) McMeen both of Columbia; three sisters including her twin sister, Eva (L.M.) Coffey of Columbia and twins Floy (Kenneth) Mobbs of Lawrenceburg and Joy (Edward) Wauford of Williamsport; two brothers, Charles (June) Beckum of Columbia, Tommy Beckum of Washington; six grandchildren, Jason Martin, Donya Golden, Emily Sanders, Lisa Vaughn, Loretta Green, Renee Fitzgerald; three great-grandchildren, Emaline Golden, Lauren Golden and Kennedy Sanders; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Young and two brothers, Bobby Beckum and Billy Beckum. Pallbearers will be Enoch George, J.B. West, Jr., Johnny West, Jeffery West, Roger Pilkinton, Doug Williams, Joe McClure, Andy McMeen, Carl Sanders, Hassell Campbell, Brandon Vaughn and Jason Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of West Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Special thanks to Dr. Gibran Naddy, the staff at Columbia Care & Rehab and the staff at Hospice of the Highland Rim.
