View Funeral Service WebcastBascom Regen Peebles, Sr., 65, former Columbia resident, died Monday, January 12, 2009 at his residence in Lebanon. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Dr. Bill Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Hebert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends from 12:00 Noon to service time at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born and reared in Columbia, he was the son of the late Martin Arnold Peebles, Sr. and Katherine Regen "Kitty" Peebles. He attended McDowell Elementary School and Whitthorne Junior High School. An outstanding athlete, he was 1961 graduate of Columbia Central High Schoolwhere he lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. During his Senior year in football, Regen was Co-Captain of the team, selected to the All-Conference Team, the All-Midstate Team, and the All-State second team. He scored 10 touchdowns, 8 extra points, and threw for two more touchdowns in the 1960 season and was also a powerful addition to the defensive team. He was elected "King of Football" by the Senior Class as a superlative. Central High School retired his #42 Lion Football Jersey, an honor bestowed on only five players in the history of the school.Recognized as one of the outstanding high school players in the country, he was recruited by Coach Bear Bryant and played for the University of Alabama football team alongside Joe Namath. He later graduated from East Tennessee State University and earned a law degree from Nashville School of Law. He served in the U. S. Army from September, 1963 to September, 1965, assigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey. He operated an insurance business in downtown Columbia for a number of years and coached football and taught at Columbia Military Academy for several years. While making his home in Columbia, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his sons, Bascom Regen "B" Peebles, Jr. and his wife, Julie Ann, of Kalamazoo, Michigan and John Arnold Peebles and his wife, Alicia Yvonne, of Memphis; brother, Martin Arnold "Peeps" Peebles, Jr. of Franklin; several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
