Bertha Walker Erwin Adkisson

Bertha Walker Erwin Adkisson, 99, former longtime resident of the McCains Community, died Thursday, November, 10, 2011 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Brown officiating. Burial will follow in McCains Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 3:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Bigbyville United Methodist Church, c/o Bill Ledford, 3894 Bigbyville Road, Columbia, TN 38401. Born near Temple, Texas and reared in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Henry Walker and Mattie Leoma Nance Walker. On February 11, 1943, she married Paul Erwin who preceded her in death on March 8, 1994. On February 1, 1995 she married William "Bill" Adkisson who also preceded her in death on August 25, 2000. She was employed by Dr. D.E. Overton as receptionist for more than 30 years. She was a longtime member of Bigbyville United Methodist Church and Bigbyville United Methodist Women's Club. She was also a member of Mynders Family and Community Education Club and a former officer of the Maury County Historical Society. Survivors include a step-son, James W. (Alice G.) Adkisson of Nashville; four grandchildren, Steve (Lynn) Adkisson of Hermitage, Phil (Melissa) Adkisson and Karen Ann Adkisson, both of Nashville, Sherri (Mark) Black of Murfreesboro; eight great grandchildren, Alex Black, Austin Black, Andi Black, Lauren Adkisson Hale, Leigh Ann Adkisson, Jacob Adkisson, Robby Adkisson, and Morgan Adkisson; one brother, Harry (Martha) Walker, Sr. of Winchester; and several nephews and nieces, including her very devoted caregiver Wanda (Jack) Butler of Columbia. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Walker Erwin; five sisters, Bobby Jean Walker, Helen Overstreet, Mildred Wagoner, Elizabeth Clark, and Evelyn Church; and three brothers, Paul Walker, James P. Walker and William E. Walker. Active pallbearers will be Rick McDonald, Dr. Bobby Walker, Alexander Erwin, Alex Black, Jack Butler, Harry Walker, Jr., Michael Overstreet, Dennis Overstreet, Steve Adkisson, Phil Adkisson, Mark Black and Phil Sutherland.
