Betty Joyce “Jerry” Phelps Springer, 92, homemaker, died Saturday, January 5, 2019 surrounded by her family at her residence on Trotwood Avenue. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Polk Memorial Gardens with her son-in-law, Dr. David Craig officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Born September 29, 1926 in Giles County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Benton Ezell Phelps and the late Orlean Austin Phelps. On July 11, 1952, she married John W. Springer, III who preceded her in death March 17, 2002. Mrs. Springer was an avid sports fan and a member of the Lioness Club. A longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Ayers-Whitney Fellowship Sunday School Class, along with the Young at Heart. Most of all, she was a wonderful cook and enjoyed family gatherings at her home. Survivors include her daughters, Sally Keith (David) Craig of Columbia; Tracy Lynn (Charles) Dean of Columbia; grandchildren, Jennifer Fowler of Nashville; Jonathan Fowler of Denver; Bentley Dean of Nashville; Emily Dean of Chattanooga; and Andy Dean of Lexington, Virginia. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret Ann Springer in 1985; and six siblings.
