Betty Lee Tomlinson Gibson

Mrs. Betty Lee Tomlinson Gibson, 86, life-long resident of the Culleoka Community, died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Henry County Health Care in Paris where she resided the past few months. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Tony Brown officiating. Burial will be in Wilkes Cemetery. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Jessie Tomlinson and Angeline Bailiss Tomlinson. She was a graduate of Culleoka High School and Columbia Business College. She married John Leonard Gibson August 23, 1941. Mr. Gibson died November 30, 1989. At the outbreak of World War II, her husband enlisted in the U. S. Army and she began work with the Maury County Draft Board and remained there until the office closed in May, 1947. She then began working at the Culleoka Post Office and served in that position for 33 years. For 3 years, she served as Postmaster of the Dellrose Post Office. Mrs. Gibson was active in the affairs of the Culleoka United Methodist Church for many years, taught Sunday School and was active in United Methodist Women, as well as Culleoka Community activities and projects. She was an organizing member of Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer in the Gift Shop for many years. Her many civic activities included charter membership in the Maury County Historical Society, which she served as Treasurer for a number of years; membership in Maury County Chapter, APTA and Tenasse Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a charter member of Captain James Madison Sparkman Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, joining on the service of her grandfather, Captain Merritt Booker Tomlinson. She held numerous offices in the chapter, including Chapter President, and for many years kept the chapter scrapbooks. On the state level, she served as Recording Secretary of the Tennessee Division of UDC. Mrs. Gibson is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Kathi) (Dwight) Stofel of Springville, Tennessee and Angeline (James) Treace of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; four grandchildren, Claudia Warner (Bill) Adams of Jacksonville, Florida, Jessica Stofel of Morrison, Tennessee, Andrea Warner (Tim) Garvey of Chicago, Illinois, and Scott Gibson Stofel of Nashville; a great-granddaughter, Angeline Leigh Adams of Jacksonville, Florida. She was preceded in death by a brother, Booker Tomlinson. Active pallbearers are Scott Stofel, Dwight Stofel, James Treace, Billy Frank Jett, Billy Clyde Foster, Milton Birdsong, Mark Landers, John Tomlinson, and Doug Burton. Honorary pallbearers include Bill Adams, Tim Garvey, Tracy Armstrong, Jackie Osborne, Kathy Grandberry, Tammy Oliver, Staff of Henry County Health Care, and Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
