Betty Ragland Noel Steenbergen, 68, resident of Mitchell Avenue, died Saturday, January 7, 2017 at St. Thomas- Rutherford Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with Father Thomas S. Wilson and Father Chris Bowhay officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Churchyard. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Friday from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church Parish Hall. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.Born September 15, 1948 in Richmond, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Buford Shelton Noel and Dorothy Elizabeth Whitelegg Noel. On September 23, 1973, she married John William "Jock" Steenbergen, III who preceded her in death September 9, 1996. She earned her Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Mary Washington. A devoted mother, grandmother and dedicated friend who loved spending time with her family and playing bridge. Mrs. Steenbergen was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and taught Sunday School for a number of years. Survivors include her children, Lee Shelton Steenbergen and William Ragland (Andrea) Steenbergen both of Murfreesboro; grandson, William Randall Steenbergen of Murfreesboro; sisters, Martha (Dr. John) Smith of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Jane Noel of Rome, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be Will Dale, Jr., Mike Sharpton, Tom Webster, Bobby Sands, Richard Matthews, Tom Gordon, and Zeke Maddux.
