Mr. Bobby Joe Chumley, 72, resident of Hicks Lane, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 after an extended stay at St. Thomas Hospital and a hard fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and children. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Brother Mark Ousley and Brother James Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4- 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the son of the late Albert Arthur and Jewell Katherine Chumley. On September 8, 1950 he married Lona Grace Norman Chumley who survives him. He retired from Union Carbide after thirty-four and one half years of service. Mr. Chumley was a devout Christian and member of Blue Springs Freewill Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Mr. Chumley loved his church, his family and his farm and animals. He loved people and always helped his fellow man. He is survived by a daughter, Dianne (Larry) Sparks of Johnson City; a son, Bud (Diane) Chumley of Columbia; three grandchildren, Amy Caperton of Alpharetta, Georgia, Tracy Chumley of Columbia, Daniel Chumley of Columbia; one great-grandson, Peyton Marston of Columbia; two brothers, Frank (Jean) Chumley of Goodlettsville, Ed (Jean) Chumley of Culleoka; three sisters, Margaret Roberts of Columbia, Charlotte Ann (Clifford) Ledford of Columbia and Francis Lorene Norman of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Arthur Chumley, Jr. and Elmer Eugene Chumley and two sisters, Elsie Chumley and Evelyn Crigger. Pallbearers will be Ed Harlan, Warren Barley, Brian Caperton, Dale McCord, Sonny Robertson and Mike Lynch. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Blue Springs Freewill Baptist Church and former co-workers at UCAR Carbon. The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Dake and his staff, Dr. Lester Porter and his staff of Tennessee Oncology, Dr. Clyde Heflin and St. Thomas Hospital for the wonderful loving care they provided over the last three years.
