Bobby Joseph Payne, 76, long-time resident of Sam Johnson Road, died Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:30 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Mike Greene officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 3:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, P.O. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. A Maury County native, he was born September 6, 1943 and was the son of the late Paul Enlow Payne and the late Sallie Anderson Payne. A 1961 graduate of Columbia Central High, he worked at Union Carbide for 37 years, retiring as an electrician in 2002. Mr. Payne enjoyed cars and racing, especially NASCAR racing. Survivors include his wife, whom he married May 16, 1964, Elva Jean Johnson Payne of Columbia; daughter, Cynthia Denise Payne of Lawrenceburg; son, Chad (Whitney) Payne of Atlanta; grandchildren, Spencer Payne of Atlanta; Mitchell Payne of Atlanta; Zachary Payne of Lawrenceburg; five nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Sue Blocker. Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Jones, Jason Hardison, Paul Blocker, Larry Rummage, Randy Staggs, Alfred Haywood, W.L. Culberson, and Lee Duff. Honorary pallbearers include Mary and Marvin Newell and members of The Shop.
