Mr. James Newton "Buddy" Hood, Jr., 80, retired employee of Monsanto Chemical Company, died Thursday, September 14, 2006 at his residence on Newt Hood Road. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Greg Gwin officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffith American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late James Newton Hood, Sr. and Ruby Mai Woodward Hood. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during WWII in the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Division, as a Staff Sergeant. He enjoyed fishing and his meetings with the coffee drinkers at Hardee's. Mr. Hood was a member of Collegevue Church of Christ. He will be missed by his beloved pets, dog Lily and cats, Snow Angel and Rowdy Zeke. Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years, Margaret Moore Hood of Columbia; a daughter, Kathey Gail (Wildon) Messer of Columbia; a sister, Dorothy Davis of Columbia; two granddaughters, Karen Dawson and Kristie Diane Messer both of Columbia; four great-grandsons, C.J. Logue, Dillian Dawson, Devan Dawson, Harley Messer; two nieces, Anne Hendrix and Carolyn Nicholson both of Columbia; and two cousins, Charlie Hood and Peggy McEwen both of Columbia. Pallbearers will be Hollis Williams, Harvey Nicholson, Steven Nicholson, Ricky Collins, Stan Farris, Arthur Hanes, Wayne Chappell and Pete Woodward. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Smith, Artie Haskin, Charlie Hood, Alvin Lunn, Jim Haney, David West, Dwaine Beck, Bobby Morgan, Enoch George, Ashley Brown, Dr. James Kelley, Dr. William Owens and Dr. David Wyatt.
