Carolina Preston Anderson "Lina" Harlan, 54, resident of Harlan Farms on Hicks Lane, died Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols and Sunday from 12:00 noon to service time at the church. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joe Evans and Richard Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington Cemetery with Rev. Born September 29, 1958 in Tallahassee Florida, her parents were the Reverend George Hilliard Anderson and Betsy Bird Anderson, then of Monticello, Florida. She moved to Tennessee with her family when she was five years old. Her father served as minister of several congregations of the United Methodist Church, thus, Lina lived in numerous places in her young life. She attended the University Campus School in Murfreesboro and later graduated from Hendersonville High School. She attended Martin Methodist College in Pulaski and graduated from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville with a degree in Political Science. While a student at Tennessee Tech, she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. After graduation, Lina worked at the Tennessee Department of Employment Security office in Columbia prior to joining the staff of Congressman Bart Gordon. Carolina and Edward Corley Harlan, former Maury County Executive and long-time Maury County farmer, were married on March 23, 1985 at Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church and made their home on the Harlan Farm in Maury County. Carolina was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the James K. Polk Memorial Association, and the Students Club, being the immediate past president. Lina was fun-loving and had a loving nature. She dedicated her life to her children and family and her dog "Gator" was her constant companion.She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her father, Reverend George Hilliard Anderson; maternal grandparents, Preston Brooks Bird and Louise Rast Bird; paternal grandparents, John C. and Pansy Mills Anderson, all of Monticello, Florida; aunt, Maria Bird Chamberlin and husband Colonel L.W. Chamberlin, and her father-in-law, Mr. Edward Harlan. In addition to her husband, Edward C. Harlan, she is survived by her son, U. S. Naval Ensign George Anderson Harlan; daughter, Caroline Rebekah Harlan; mother, Betsy Bird Anderson; sisters, Lucinda Bird (Richard) Anderson and Susan Maria (Woody) Wiggins; cousins, L.W. (Rindy) Chamberlin III; nephew, Dr. Elwood Holler (Sara) Wiggins; nieces, Susan Rebekah Wiggins, Rebekah Walton (Nathaniel) Wright, Caroline Brooks (Jonathan) Holt, Mary Catherine (Taylor) Clement; as well as many cousins in Florida and Tennessee. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Jean Corley Harlan; brothers-in-law, Allen (Jenny) Harlan and Patrick (Julie) Harlan; and sister-in-law, Gayle (Michael) Parrott; a nephew and several nieces. Active pallbearers are Don Harlan, David Harlan, Frank Jones, Brett Herrman, Dr. Mike Tyler, Lucas Burt, Stephen Kington, and Dr. Nathaniel Wright. Honorary pallbearers include Anne Sneed, Terri Gordon, Sandra Barnhart, Vance Brummal, Charlotte Teague, Phillip Griffith, George R. Gilliam, and the Students' Club.
