W. CARY PULLIAM, JR.W. Cary Pulliam, Jr., retired realtor and former owner of Cary Pulliam and Associates, Better Homes and Gardens, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at his residence.A memorial service will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Williamson and Rev. Steve Thomas officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Monday after 1:00 P.M. at the church.Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.Mr. Pulliam, son of the late Alma Roper Bass Pulliam and Willard Cary Pulliam, was a native of Roxboro, North Carolina. He was educated in the Person County schools, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.Mr. Pulliam served in World War II in both the Pacific and European Theatres as commander of a heavy weapons company in the 35th Infantry Division.In 1945, Mr. Pulliam joined Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company as a buyer. He retired from Liggett and Myers in 1970 to enter the real estate business in Columbia. He was instrumental in founding and organizing the Maury County Board of Realtors serving as its President and "Realtor of the Year". Additionally, he served on numerous committees of the Tennessee Association of Realtors.Mr. Pulliam served on the Columbia Planning Commission for many years. He was Chairman of the Columbia Board of Utilities, a Director of the Maury County Chamber of Commerce, a life member and director of the Columbia Kiwanis Club and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as both deacon and elder. Survivors include his wife, Judith Harris Doss Pulliam, whom he married in 1989; one son, Dr. Cary Watson (Robin) Pulliam of Columbia; one stepdaughter, Randle Doss of New York; one stepson, Brendan (Maggie) Doss of San Francisco; five grandchildren, Watson, Caroline and Alexandra Pulliam, all of Columbia; Zoe and David Doss, both of San Francisco; two sisters, Glenda P. Williams of Roxboro, North Carolina; Nell P. Elliott of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Frances Watson Pulliam, in 1985; a brother Bradsher Pulliam of Wendell, North Carolina in 1994; and one sister, Alma P. Carver of Roxboro, North Carolina in 2001.Honorary pallbearers will be past and present elders and deacons of First Presbyterian Church; members of Columbia Kiwanis Club, James H. Jones, Jr., Houston Crozier, Dr. Harold Pryor, J. Frank Walker, Robert Cathey, Jack Sloan, E. H. Frakes, Jr., Dr. Mark Shelton, Dr. Steve Simmons, Dr. Jim Weisman, Dr. Grant Barr, Jim Dubois, Rev. Elmer Crosby, David Greenfield, Rev. Steve Thomas, Price Keller, Jim Criswell, Lawrence G. Murphy, Edward A. Lyles, Jason Lyles, John Satterwhite, Sr., John Satterwhite, Jr., Bill Rainey, Ernie Allen, Bill Chafin, Charles Cimerro, Bill Walker, Rev. Jamie Dale, and Leon Risher.
