Mr. Caswell Freeman Hays, 87, resident of Wahella Way, died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at Maury Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Hughes and Rev. Jeff Jacob officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the church atrium. Private family interment will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. A native of Murray, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Collier Hays and Caswell "Callie" Freeman Hays. He attended Murray University and served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II. Later, he served a number of years in the U. S. Air Force Reserves. Mr. Hays began work with the Social Security Administration in 1948 and came to Columbia from Nashville in 1959. He served as District Manager of the Columbia office until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He served two terms as a member of the Columbia City Council and was a former long-time member of the Columbia Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Leah Williamson Hays of Columbia; two daughters, Peggy Leah Hays (Charles W.) Williams of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Mary Dudley Hays (Dennis Lee) Zullig of Raleigh, North Carolina; a sister, Martha Hays Hoskins of Louisville, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Wesley (K. C.) Williams, Christopher (Meghan) Williams, and Leah Zullig (Daniel) Conner; and a great-grandchild, Jude Caswell Williams. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bettie Hays Miller and a brother, Golan C. Hays. Members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
