View Funeral Webcast Chesley Herbert Thomason, 88, retired employee of DuPont/Spontex and resident of Park Drive, died Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. at West Seventh Street Church of Christ with Ted Burleson, Mike Kesler, Jeremy Butt, and Randy Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Wednesday from 12:00 - 1:00 P.M. at West Seventh Street Church. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born January 25, 1930 in Maury County, he was the son of the late James Edward Porter Thomason and the late Elsie Holbert Thomason. On October 30, 1953, he married Jewell Harris Thomason who preceded him in death May 11, 2009. He was a 1949 graduate of Hay Long High School and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Thomason was an avid U.T. Vols and Atlanta Braves fan. He was a forty-four-year member of West Seventh Street Church of Christ, where he had served as elder for seventeen years and was a former song leader. He had also served as song leader at many Gospel Meetings throughout the area. Survivors include his daughter, Julie Thomason of Columbia; son, Stephen (Connie) Thomason of Columbia; grandchildren, Matthew (Ashley) Thomason and Morgan (Wesley) Bland, both of Columbia; great grandchildren, Graham Matthew Thomason, Oliver Guy Thomason, Owen James Bland, all of Columbia; sister, Jeanette Cole of Columbia; brother, Ken (Carolin) Thomason of Memphis; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Unseld Thomason. Active pallbearers will be Matthew Thomason, Wesley Bland, Chuck Terry, Mark Witherow, Dr. David Foster, George Freeman, Carter Hill, and Jim Carrigan. Honorary pallbearers will include Stan Farris, J. B. Long, Dr. Andy Woodard, Adrian Billingsley, Dr. John Simmons, Dr. Tim Gordon, Dr. Jim Marshall, William Jarrett, Kenneth Cherry, and past and present Elders & Deacons of West Seventh Street Church of Christ.
