Clyde Thomas "Rip" Collins, Jr., 79, retired maintenance supervisor for the Tennessee National Guard, died Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Rosewood Manor. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Jack White officiating. Burial will be in Morton Cemetery with military honors provided at graveside by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Collins was a member of the Church of Christ and memorials may be made to Columbia Academy, 1101 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401. He was a 1946 graduate of Columbia Central High School.He served 38 years in the Tennessee National Guard, 473rd Support Battalion headquartered in Columbia, including active service during the Korean War.He was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, served as a member of the Honor Guard and flag-folding detail, the 40 & 8, and Columbia Elks Lodge.Survivors include his wife, Dorlene Mills Collins of Columbia; a brother, Bobby W. (Sherry) Collins of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; a grandson, Thomas Lee (Shelia) Collins; 3 grandchildren, Leah, Tyler, and Randy; an aunt, Alma Harmon Maxwell of Pottsville. He was preceded in death by a son, James Anthony Collins; a sister, Dorothy Ann Brown; and his step-mother, Louella Cook Collins.Members of the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 Honor Guard and flag-folding detail will serve as active pallbearers.
