View Funeral WebcastClyde Waller Farris, 91, retired banker and resident of WKRM Lane, died Monday, May 1, 2017, at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 P.M. at South Gate Church of Christ with John Thomas and Joe Macer officiating. Burial will follow in Old Well Cemetery with Barry Farris officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 3:00 - 7:00 P.M. at South Gate Church of Christ. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Born July 7, 1925, in the Hampshire Community of Maury County, he was the son of the late Herbert Henry Farris, Sr. and the late Josephine Olivia Kennedy Farris. He proudly served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Farris served on the Maury County Commission from 1969 - 1986; and during his second term from 1991 - 1994, he was one of the five-person committee who negotiated with General Motors to bring Saturn to Maury County. Also during his time on the commission, the Maury County Water System began running water to the rural areas of the county. He served on the Board of The Hampshire Bank and was employed at First Farmers & Merchants Bank for over thirty-five years and made countless loans with a handshake. A sports enthusiast, Mr. Farris enjoyed playing basketball in his younger days and later he loved attending his son's football, basketball, and baseball games. He had also coached youth sports. He continued to support Columbia Academy sports and was a charter member of the CA Athletic Foundation. He loved hard work (especially farming) and he loved the country. He was passionate about taking care of the Old Well Cemetery, which he mowed for many years. Mr. Farris was proud of his family and above all, he loved God. He was one of the original members of Eastside Church of Christ (now South Gate Church of Christ). Survivors include his wife whom he married December 13, 1957, Sara Elizabeth Whiteside Farris of Columbia; daughter, Iris (Jim) Anderson of Columbia; son, Richard (Rhonda) Farris of Columbia; grandchildren, Blair (Blake) Beckham, Baylie Farris, Samie Anderson, Shelby Anderson; great grandchildren, Jazlyn Beckham and Bowen Beckham; sister, Ruth Tart of Falls Church, Virginia; and brother, Billy (Carolyn) Farris of Lake Anna, Virginia. He was preceded in death by siblings, James Farris, Herbert Farris, Jr., Linda Bell, Glenn Farris, and two infant siblings. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Brown, Gary Boyd, Blake Hight, James Polk, Cory Primm, Ken Spahr, Mike Bone, Kent Bell, and Brian Gregory. Honorary pallbearers will include elders and deacons of South Gate Church of Christ and former employees of First Farmers & Merchants Bank. The family would like to express a special thank you to Hospice Compassus, Dr. Ben Gardner, nurse Rita Pace, nurses and staff of Maury Regional Medical Center 2nd Floor Stepdown Unit, and Dr. Anuradha Mann.
