View Funeral Webcast View Video Tribute Darrell Craig Vinson, 69, a resident of Roswell, Georgia, passed away in Atlanta on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 after a short illness. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Deacon Dan McCulley officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Friendship House, P.O. Box 920, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Darrell was born on January 3, 1954 in McMinnville, Tennessee, to the late H. P. and Dot Vinson. He grew up in Columbia, attended Columbia Military Academy, and graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1973. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and returned to Columbia where he worked at the Shady Brook Cinemas, a family business, for a number of years. Darrell moved to Atlanta, Georgia, later in life and settled in Roswell, Georgia. He lived in Georgia for approximately twenty years, where he was employed by Starbucks and the Kroger Company. Darrell was a loving son and brother, and was loyal caregiver to his mother during her final illness. He married his beloved wife, Linda in 1997. Darrell was full of humor and grace, enjoyed the company of his many friends. He was well known for his compassion in helping many alcoholics recovery from the disease of alcoholism. He regularly attended and spoke at recovery meetings and sponsored a host of recovering alcoholics. He will be greatly missed by the recovery communities in Atlanta and Columbia, as well as by his many friends, former classmates and sponsors in both locations. He never missed a class reunion and was looking forward to the fiftieth reunion of his Columbia Central High School class of 1973. He was loved by many, who will never forget his lively and self-deprecating sense of humor, his love of cats, as well as his deep compassion for others. Darrell is survived by his wife, Linda Vinson; brother, Vince Vinson; aunt, Mrs. Betty Vinson; and cousins, Janice Vinson (Dan), Mona Vinson (Dan). The family would like to especially recognize Starlin Bailey, who was instrumental in Darrell’s recovery. Active pallbearers will be Larry Anderson, Jim Anderson, David Heathcock, Jim Poling, John Ring, and Tim Rummage. Honorary pallbearers include Elmer Cooper, Joe Jennings, John Mullins, Kristin Mullins, and members of the recovery communities in Columbia and Atlanta.
