David Lewis Grimes, 68, formerly from Columbia, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home May 12, 2016, after a courageous, year long battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mumford Lewis Grimes and Betty Dodson Grimes. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Takako Miyazaki Grimes; son, Matthew Grimes (Betsy); grandchildren, Taylor Grimes and Miya Grimes; sisters, Laura Henderlight (David), Debbie Hoskins (John); nieces, Jenny Gilliam (Jonathan) and Kailee Henderlight. David was a member of First United Methodist Church in Columbia and retired from Centerstone Mental Health where he was a Licensed Clinic Social Worker and served as a Senior Vice President of Adult Services. He loved his family, wrote a song for his grandchildren, and enjoyed outdoor activities, especially hiking, fishing, kayaking, and UT sports. David was known, by all who knew him well, to be an honorable man. He was all about his faith and service to others, particularly in the mental health care field. David's growth, from the humble family roots in Hampshire, Tennessee, into someone who so positively impacted many Middle Tennesseans through his work at Centerstone speaks clearly of his determination to help others. Receiving of friends will take place at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee, Sunday, May 15 from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. with funeral services at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Chip Hunter officiating. The family will gather at Polk Memorial Gardens to follow for interment. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Active pallbearers will be Bud Grimes, Jimmy Grimes, Tony Grimes, Wally Grimes, Bobby Floyd, and Jonathan Gilliam. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.braintumor.org.
