David C Harwell, 66, retired NASA engineer, died unexpectedly after a short illness on March 10, 2025, at his home in Huntsville, AL. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Bessie Harwell.
A graveside service will take place at St John's, Ashwood on Saturday, March 29 at 11:00 AM with Father Chris Bowhay officiating. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home are assisting the family with local arrangements. Online condolences may be extended at www.oakesandnichols.com.
Born August 16, 1958 in Atlanta, GA, he was the son of the late Dr. Valton C. Harwell and the late Van McRady Harwell-Callaway. David was a graduate of Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, TN and received his bachelors degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
He loved sports, particularly Alabama football and Braves baseball. He enjoyed following the Blue Angels and traveled to many of their air shows. Being outside and walking the mountain behind his home was his way of enjoying nature. He was an avid reader and a quiet, kind man of great depth. He married, Bessie, the one and only love of his life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sisters; Susan (Bill) Riley of Columbia, TN and Lisa Van Harwell of Washington D.C.. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jennifer Harwell. He loved his niece, Jessica Johnston of Columbia; nephews, William Johnston, USAF stationed in New Mexico and Tyler Harwell of Washington D.C.; stepsons, Eric Hughes, Chuck Hughes, and Richard Hughes; and all his grandchildren. He loved his dogs (Louie, "Tink", Harley and Jaxson). He tended them with much care.
