Donald Fred McTaggart

December 2, 1963 — February 21, 2025

Columbia

Donald Fred McTaggart passed away on Friday 21st, 2025. Don was a beloved son, father, husband, grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Don grew up in Munster, IN, where he spent his formative years. He worked for the railroad as a train engineer for over 40 years. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. He retired from the Indiana Harbor Belt in December 2023.

Don was a devoted father and loved spending time with his children. He enjoyed telling stories, playing games, and watching their favorite TV shows, and seeing the latest movies. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced. Later in life, Don met his wife, Donna. They shared a wonderful life in their 13 years together. After retirement, Don and Donna moved from Indiana to Tennessee. Don enjoyed building his new train layout and had just begun to make friends at their wonderful church home, West Point Cumberland Presbyterian. In his free time, Don enjoyed trains, traveling, and loved watching and commentating on all Chicago and Big10 sports including the Bears, Cubs, Blackhawks, Indiana University, and Notre Dame. Don was known for his sense of humor and his quick wit. He was gregarious, generous, and a friend to everyone. The more he liked you, the more he joked with you. He loved a good prank and tipped extra when a server understood his humor. He tipped even more when the server could return the joke!

Don is survived by his wife, Donna McTaggart, his children, Brittany Taden (John Taden), Cody McTaggart, Jenny Montani (Mike Montani), Laura Harmon (Matthew Harmon), his grandchildren, McKenzie, Donnie, Zachary, Matthew, Grayson, Ryan, Madison, Dominic, and Charlotte; his father, John McTaggart, his brother, Jay McTaggart, and his sister, Kathleen McTaggart. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him and live on through his family and friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 27th from 12pm-2pm at the West Point Cumberland Presbyterian church located at 1533 Theta Pike, Columbia, TN 38401. The funeral service will begin at 2pm at the same location, with burial following immediately after at the church cemetery.
