Doris Ladd Murphy Cranford, 91, lifelong resident of Columbia, died Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care. A graveside service will be conducted Monday at 11:30 A.M. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Edward Clayton Murphy officiating. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born March 22, 1927 in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Newton Ladd and the late Jessie Ophelia Whitaker Ladd. On June 14, 1947, she married Charles R. Murphy, Sr. who preceded her in death September 4, 1974. On July 23, 1975, she married James Latta Cranford who preceded her in death December 24, 2016. She was graduate of Spring Hill High School and retired from South Central Bell after more than 30 years. A loving mother and grandmother, Mrs. Cranford had pure joy for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gospel and classical music and was a member of Ephesus Church of Christ. Survivors include her sons, Charles (Carol) Murphy of Columbia; Tom (Jennifer) Murphy of Columbia; step sons, Jim (Joyce) Cranford of Columbia; Bob (Gaye) Cranford of Tyler, Texas; grandchildren, Harrison Murphy of Murfreesboro; Holden Murphy of Columbia; and nieces, Bonnie (John) Chadwell; and Susan (Mike) Fitzgerald. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Ladd Smith; Janie Ladd Parrish; and Ruby Ladd Curtis; and brother, William Newton “Billy” Ladd. Active pallbearers will be Harrison Murphy, Billy Truelove, Travis Johnson, Ken Harris, Ron Harris, and Jim Criswell.
