Mrs. Dorothy Carpenter Smith, 84, a resident of Church Street in Lynnville, died Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Blake Hawthorne and Rev. SteveVan Hooser officiating. Burial will be in Lynnwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Lynnville First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 25, Lynnville 38472. The Giles County native was the daughter of the late Albert Houston Carpenter and Cora Shrader Carpenter and a graduate of Jones High School in Lynnville. Mrs. Smith was a long-time member of Lynnville First Presbyterian Church. She was retired from L. E. Moore Drug Store in Lynnville after serving as clerk for 15 years, and loved sewing, refinishing furniture, and was an amateur artist. She was married January 1, 1943 to William R. Smith who died December 11, 1991. Survivors include daughters, Gayle S. (Arnold) Williams of Lynnville and Betty S. (Gene) Pigg of Summertown; sisters, Grace Gilliam of Columbia, Maudie Sargent of Anderson, Indiana, and Mildred Sargent of Columbia; brother, George (Mary Ruth) Carpenter of Columbia; grandchildren, Michael (Melissa) Williams, Laurie (Jim) Warren, Rita Williams, William D. Pigg, and Jennifer N. Pigg; great-grandchildren, Abigail Warren and Leah Warren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Claudie Lane, Annie Ruth Dixon, and Ella Carpenter; and brother, Mahlon Carpenter. Active pallbearers are Donnie Hanna, Bill Sargent, Monty Gilliam, Billy Kennedy, Buford Pickens, and Bobby Allen Hollis. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. James Marshall and Dr. John Worthman.
