Dortha "Dotsy" Matheny Hight

Dortha (Dotsy) Matheny Hight, age 80, departed this life on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her family.   Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Hueston Marshall and John Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.   The family suggests memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Dotsy was born on March 1, 1939 to the late John A. Matheny and Viola Ferrell Matheny. She was a lifelong resident of Columbia, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Central High School class of 1957. After graduation she started her career as a legal secretary working for Mr. Bill Leech for several years. She was a licensed insurance agent and worked for over twenty years for Shelter Insurance Company in the family business. Mrs. Hight was very active in American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed helping and caring for others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her only child Thomas M. Hight, Jr. and his wife Jadonna Roland Hight; grandsons: Thomas Blake Hight and Mathis Jadon Hight; brother: John Wade Matheny and his wife Katie; nephew: Johnny Matheny; niece: Pam Matheny Birkel; the father of her son, Tommy Hight, Sr.; special cousin, Cathy and Billy Thompson of Smyrna; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents: John and Viola Matheny; sister: Bobbie Matheny Lee; and special friend; William Harmon. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Kay Lott her private sitter, Avalon Hospice and Tim Brashears. Family and friends will serve as active pallbearers.
