View Funeral Webcast Dr. Carl Newton Simpkins, Jr., 89, retired career Naval surgeon, died Friday, May 27, 2011 at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with The Rev. Dr. William C. Martin, vicar of Grace Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Churchyard at Ashwood. Rev. Bob Adair, retired U. S. Navy Chaplain and the U. S. Navy Honors Detail will provide military honors at graveside. The family will visit with friends Monday from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Born March 3, 1922, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Nellie Estelle Patrick and Carl Newton Simpkins, Sr., he was a graduate of Boys' High in Atlanta and the University of Georgia in Athens. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Navy in both France and in the Pacific and was awarded numerous medals. After service in the war, he graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and rejoined the U.S. Navy. He was board certified in both thoracic surgery and general surgery. He later served in the Vietnam War on the Hospital Ship, USS Sanctuary. During this assignment, he served as Chief of Surgery and the ship's Executive Officer. Prior to his retirement as a Naval Captain, he served on the Disability Board of the U. S. Navy Surgeon General's Office in Washington, D.C. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked as the Medical Director for Springs Industries in South Carolina for several years. Dr. and Mrs. Simpkins then retired to her family's farm in the Spring Hill Community to make their home. He was a communicant of Grace Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Dorothy Ann McKee Simpkins, and their four children: Carl N. Simpkins III, of Spring Hill, Mary Simpkins of Washington, D.C., Sarah Simpkins, of Spring Hill, and Laura Simpkins Levy and her husband, Farrell Levy of Knoxville, and their children, Rachel Elaine Levy and Carolyn Lillian Levy. He is also survived by his nephew, Carl (Carol) Sosnin of Birmingham, Alabama; and great-nephew, Carl Sosnin of Nashville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Simpkins and sister, Dorothy Sosnin.
