Mr. Elvin Horace "Pete" Rogers, Jr., 83, retired furnace operator for Union Carbide Corporation, died Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Alterra Sterling House. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Mike Roberts officiating. Military honors at graveside will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends at graveside. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Lawrence County native was the son of the late Elvin H. Rogers, Sr. and Rachel Scoggin Rogers. He attended Maury County schools and entered the U. S. Army directly from high school. During World War II, he served in the European Theatre of Operation in France, Germany, and Belgium and also in England. Following his military service, he returned to Columbia and was employed at Union Carbide Corporation for 31 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roslie Russell Rogers in June, 2007. Survivors include a sister, Dolores Rogers Brown of Columbia; a brother, Billy T. (Patsy) Rogers of Columbia; several nieces and nephews. Friends and family will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include the staff of Alterra Sterling House, retired employees of Union Carbide Corporation, and Pat and James Hardison.
