Mr. George Edward "Ed" Montgomery, 73, retired firefighter with the Columbia Fire Department died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at his residence on Rosewood Drive. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Gene Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Columbia Fire Department Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. with a Masonic service beginning at 7p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Davidson County native was the son of the late James Edward Montgomery and Idell Carter Montgomery. He was married to Elsie M. Montgomery who preceded him in death December 23, 1982. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. Mr. Montgomery was a member of the Ed T. Workman Masonic Lodge #610 in Mt. Pleasant. Survivors include two daughters Angela Smithson of Madison, Sherry (Kevin) Ramsey of Marion, Illinois; two brothers, Haskell (Martha) Montgomery of Greenbrier, James Randall Montgomery of Alaska; three grandchildren, Ali Smithson of Madison, Benji Ramsey and Mikki Ramsey both of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Columbia Fire Department Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Columbia Fire Department, William A. Dugger, J. W. Scott, Johnnie B. Oliver, Mark Gandee, Wayne Hickman and Don Martin.
