Edward Wayne Hickman, 79, resident of the McCains Community, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at Maury Regional Medical Center.Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Barry Farris and Larry Benderman officiating. Burial will follow in Lynnwood Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 2:00 – 8:00 P.M. and Saturday from 12:00 – 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home.The family suggests memorials to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Mynders Community Center, c/o Billy Sims, 3680 Pulaski Highway, Culleoka, TN 38451. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.Born February 9, 1939 in Giles County, he was the son of the late Raymond Carmack Hickman and the late Lois Mae Hubbell Hickman. On July 27, 1961, he married Dorothy Ann Cothran Hickman who survives. Mr. Hickman was a 1957 graduate of Jones High School in Lynnville and owned a service station in Lynnville until he was drafted into the Army in 1962 where he was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. After his military service, he attended Columbia State Community College. He and his wife moved to Nashville where he worked as a salesman at Jones Supply Company. In 1972, they moved to Columbia where they were co-owners of C & H Flooring Company with Carter Flooring Company. He worked as a Rural Letter Carrier at the Columbia Post Office from 1978 until his retirement in 2002. In 1982, they opened Wayne’s Country Store which was located on Pulaski Highway in the McCains Community. In July 2007, they celebrated being in business for twenty-five years and two weeks later the store was tragically destroyed by fire. He continued to operate Wayne’s Country Store in his garage, where he enjoyed spending time with his friends, sharing stories, and making everyone laugh. He also cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and had visited forty-eight of the fifty states. He was a member and Past President of Mynders Community Club, and a member of Middle Tennessee Rural Letter Carriers where he had served as Past President and Vice President. Wayne was a devoted Christian and faithful member of Stiversville Church of Christ. In addition to his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Dorothy Ann Cothran Hickman of McCains Community, he is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Sonny) Shackelford of Columbia; son, Richard (Melanie) Hickman of Columbia; grandchildren, Bryan (Amanda) Hickman, David (Shelley) Hickman, Rachel Hickman, Cole Shackelford, Anna Shackelford, Leah (Greg) Ginn; great grandchildren, Hayden Hickman, Emma Hickman, Aria Hickman, Lauren Ginn, Hannah Ginn; brother-in-law, John Boyd (Janet) Cothran of Culleoka; sister-in-law, Catherine Davis of Hohenwald; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond Howard Hickman and W. T. Hickman.Active pallbearers will be Robert Whitley, Scott Hanna, Billy Sims, Ray Rummage, Jeff Davis, and Stan Hickman. Honorary pallbearers will include members of Stiversville Church of Christ, Tennessee Rural Letter Carriers, Mynders Community Club, and family and friends.
