Mr. Eldred R. Martin, 87, lifelong resident of Culleoka, died peacefully Sunday, October 26, 2003, at Maury Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Paul Webb and Calvin Hardison officiating. Burial will be in Shane Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late George Martin and Catherine Martin. He was married to Jessie Hight Martin who preceded him in death April 24, 1984. He was a graduate of Culleoka High School where he played on the school's last football team. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a dairy farmer and owner/operator of Martin's Garage. Mr. Martin was an active civic and community leader and volunteer. He started the Culleoka Volunteer Fire Department in 1952 and was the fire chief until his son Edward took over. He was a member and elder of Campbell Station Church of Christ where he led the singing for fifty-seven years. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by both of his sons, Gerald Martin and Edward Martin. Survivors include four grandchildren, Mrs. Lisa (Sam) Hammett of Lenoir City, Mrs. Audrey (Mike) Galm of Fort Collins, Colorado, Miss Jenifer Martin and Miss Catherine Martin both of Deland, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Sasha Hammett and Matthew Martin Hammett; much loved neighbors and friends, Ronald and Patricia Luna, Shane and Mandy Luna, Scott and Rachel Luna; special friend and caregiver, Nora Patton; former caregiver, Edna Clymer; and daughter-in-law, Mary Frances Stewart Martin. Pallbearers will be Ronald Luna, Shane Luna, Scott Luna, Jackie Thompson, Jimmy Thompson and James Harwell.
