MRS. ELIZABETH BURNETT Mrs. Elizabeth Washington Gordon Burnett, 99, retired teacher at Andrews School and resident of Academy Lane, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Maury Regional Hospital. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 10:30 A.M. at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Bill Williamson officiating. The family will visit with friends Saturday after 9:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Maury County Animal Shelter, P. O. Box 1623, Columbia, TN, 38402. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late William Bradshaw Gordon and Matilda Magruder Gordon. She was married to Paul Monroe Burnett who preceded her in death on May 24, 1961. She was a graduate of Maury County Schools, received her Teaching Certificate from Peabody College and attended Cumberland University. A member of United Daughters of the Confederacy, Captain James Madison Sparkman Chapter #2363, Mrs. Burnett was one of the last two surviving "Real Daughters" in Maury County. Her father was in the Sixth Tennessee Calvary, Confederate States of America and was wounded at the Battle of Franklin. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Burnett "Bookie" (George) Cole of Columbia; one son, Paul M. Burnett, Jr. of Meridian, Idaho; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Gay (Dennis) Anderson of Columbia; Joni O'Neil Henderson (Steve) Childress of Nashville; Edward O'Neil (Denise) Henderson, Jr. of Naples, Florida; two great grandchildren, Margaret E. "Maggie" Anderson and Edward O'Neil Henderson, III; cousin, Mary Webster Sowell; and two nephews, Will Gordon and Tom Gordon. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Helen Burnett Gallagher and one brother, William Bradshaw Gordon. Pallbearers will be Dr. Robert Bain, Ray Woody, II, Dennis M. Anderson, Edward O'Neil Henderson, Jr., Steve Childress, and George Cole. Honorary pallbearers will be Will Gordon, Jerry Schoeberl, Jonathan Sowell, Dr. Campbell Sowell, Jr., and Tom Webster.
