Mrs. James N. Voorhies Mrs. Elizabeth Armstrong Voorhies, 100, long-time teacher and resident of Brunson Drive, died Saturday, May 8, 2004 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill Williamson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols and from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 801 South High Street, Columbia or the American Red Cross, 410 West Ninth Street, Columbia. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Savannah in Hardin County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Sam H. Armstrong and Caroline Bingham Armstrong. A 1922 graduate of Central High School, she earned a Bachelor's Degree at Middle Tennessee State University and a Degree in Library Science at George Peabody College. She taught for a number of years at Andrews Elementary School and Baker Elementary School and served as Librarian at Baker Elementary School prior to her retirement. Mrs. Voorhies was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday School for many years and served as Chairman of the Women's Evening Circle. She was a member of the Association of University Women, Maury County Retired Teachers Association, Business and Professional Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. On April 29, 1925 she married James N. Voorhies who preceded her in death January 8, 1957. Survivors include two daughters, Miss Marguerite Voorhies and Mrs. Carolyn Voorhies Hunter, both of Columbia; five grandsons, John Norris Hunter, III, Johnny Voorhies, Joseph Voorhies, Dickie Voorhies and Nickie Voorhies, all of Columbia; a granddaughter, Michelle Voorhies of Columbia; several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James L. Voorhies, January 11, 1985. Elders and Deacons of First Presbyterian Church will serve as pallbearers.
