Elma Lee Fly Quirk

Mrs. Elma Lee Fly Quirk, 93, retired school teacher, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted at 2p.m. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Andrew Mayton and Rev. Phillip Wright officiating. Burial will be in Neapolis Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4 - 8p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Neapolis Cemetery Association, c/o Freeda Potts, 403 Cheyenne Trail, Columbia, TN, 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Marvin H. Fly and Fannie Galloway Fly. On December 24, 1936 she married Jesse Lee Quirk who preceded her in death December 3, 1996. She was a former longtime resident of the Neapolis Community and the Carters Creek Community. Mrs. Quirk was a 1931 graduate of Columbia Central High School and earned her teaching certificate at Martin College. She taught school in the Maury County School system and was a member of the Maury County Retired Teachers Association. She was the oldest member of Neapolis United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Jesse R. (Janice) Quirk of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Gloria Ann (Leroy) Burns of Columbia; a sister, Frances Watkins of Columbia; devoted niece, Joanne Ramsey of Columbia; six grandchildren, Phillip W. (Lauri) Burns of the Neapolis Community, Jimmy R. (Anna) Quirk of Columbia, Jeff Quirk of Mt. Pleasant, Eric (Michelle) Burns of Franklin, Angela (Doug) Sherrod of Valdosta, Georgia, Michelle (Tony) Thomas of Franklin, KY; and six great-grandchildren, Hannah Burns, Sam Quirk, Ryan Sherrod, Jesse Lee Thomas, Rebecca Sherrod and Wesley Thomas. She was preceded in death by a son, William Harold Quirk, a great-grandson, Brad Quirk, four sisters and two brothers. Pallbearers will be Phillip W. Burns, Jimmy R. Quirk, Jeff Quirk, Eric Burns, Donald Kincaid and Ron Neal. Honorary pallbearers will be Charli Head, David and Mary Neil Wise, members of Neapolis United Methodist Church and the staff of NHC Healthcare of Columbia.
