Elmer Litton Hughes, 77, former long-time farmer of Carter’s Creek Station Community, died Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at NHC-Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Chris Smith and Clay Gentry officiating. Burial will follow in Neapolis Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Born July 18, 1942 in Williamson County, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Albert Clifton Hughes and the late Helen Litton Hughes. He worked for the Middle Tennessee Experiment Station for two years, before he began his thirty-eight-year career with Union Carbide, where he retired as an expeditor. Mr. Hughes enjoyed farming and fishing. He was a member of Lanton Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Doris Faye Gilliam Hughes of Columbia; children, Robert Clayton Hughes of Brentwood; Jade Yvonne (Mike) Young of Columbia; Carrie Elizabeth Hughes of Lynnville; former daughter-in-law, Maribeth Hughes of Columbia; sisters, Cornelia (L.E.) McKee of Franklin; Nancy (Tom) McBee of Columbia; brother, Maurice (Louise) Hughes of Franklin; grandchildren, Catherine Elizabeth Hughes of Nashville; Anna Taylor Young of Columbia; Bethany Claire Young of Columbia; Ethan Williams Young of Columbia; and sister-in-law, Brenda (Kenny) Wells of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his brother, Oscar (Robbie) Hughes. Active pallbearers will be Jason Dodson, Chad Pantall, Tommy Carpenter, Kenny Wells, David Kincaid, Yancey Smith, Blaine Hyle, and Wiley Toombs. Honorary pallbearers include his nieces and nephews, Deweese Berry, Douglas Berry, and members of Lanton Church of Christ. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of NHC-Columbia, especially Holly, Summar, Courtney, Beth, Kirby, Kristy, and Noah.
