Ethelyne Burkett Windrow

d. August 10, 2002

Mrs. Ethelyne Douglas Burkett Windrow, 95, retired teacher and former long-time resident of Columbia, died Sunday, August 11, 2002 in Fort Smith, Arkansas where she made her home the past several years. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Triune Cemetery in Williamson County with Rev. Larry Guinn officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. Memorials may be made to the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Born March 30, 1907 in the Southport Community in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late A. D. Burkett and Nancy Catherine McNeill Burkett and one of 10 children of a close-knit farming family. For many years she was the only remaining member of her immediate family. She was a graduate of Columbia Central High School and Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro and taught in public elementary schools in Columbia for 42 years. She married E. H. Windrow of Eagleville, Tennessee December 22, 1939. They served together, he as principal and she as second grade teacher, at Highland Park Elementary School for the remainder of their careers. Mr. Windrow preceded her in death in 1987. Mrs. Windrow was a life-long member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, serving as choir member and soloist, Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Session. She was active in the PTA, Women's Missionary Society of her church and the Maury County Retired Teachers' Association. She was an accomplished quilter, seamstress and cook. She loved all music, but sacred choral music was her favorite. Known for her quick wit and hospitality, she retained her sparkling personality until the end of her life. Survivors include twin daughters, Ann Travis Windrow (James Robert) Crabtree of Crossville, Tennessee and Nancy Glenn Windrow (Dr. Rowland P.) Vernon of Fort Smith, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Rowland Pleasant (Randa) Vernon, III of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Ann Elizabeth Vernon of Cambridge, England and Howard Windrow Vernon of Fort Smith, Arkansas; one great-grandchild, Reis Rowland Vernon of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
