Mr. Eugene "Satch" Layne, 74, retired lineman and repair technician for South Central Bell for 35 years and a resident of Albert Matthews Road, died Saturday, June 11, 2005 at Columbia Care and Rehabilation Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Wayne Parks and Terry Peery officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Hebert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4004 Hillsboro Pike, Suite 219B, Nashville, 37215. He was a 1949 graduate of Columbia Central High School and served in the U. S. Army from 1953 through 1955. He was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, Telephone Pioneers, Mynders Community Club, and a 50-year member of Benton Masonic Lodge. Following his retirement, he enjoyed other activities, especially farming. He was an organizer, life-time member and former President of the Maury County Gun Club. He was a long-time member and former Chairman of the Maury County Democratic Party. For a number of years he operated Christmas Tree Headquarters and presented programs to elementary school students as "Telephone Gene." He was a long-time member of West Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, June Montgomery Layne of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Todd Blocker of Columbia; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Eugene and Kathy Layne of Columbia; five grandchildren, Stacey (Brandon) Jackson, Christopher Layne, Lindsey Layne, Kelsey Blocker and Katie Blocker; a great-grandchild, Will Jackson; a sister, Janet Mitchell of Dawson, Alabama; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Layne. Active pallbearers are Ken Montgomery, Bobby Montgomery, Barry Montgomery, Keith Layne, Greg Layne, Christopher Layne, Brandon Jackson, Rusty Montgomery and Guy Montgomery. Honorary pallbearers include members of the Maury County Gun Club, Telephone Pioneers, Nursing Staff of Columbia Cares and Rehab, Gerald Martin, and Dr. William Robinson.
