Mrs. Frances Jones Latham Meek, 84, long-time resident of Old Wiliamsport Pike, died Friday, November 24, 2006 at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Mike Williams officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was daughter of the late William Jones Latham and Ida Wilkes Latham. She was reared in the Culleoka Community, moving to Columbia in 1937. She was a 1940 graduate of Columbia Central High School and attended Columbia Business College. Mrs. Meek was a member and active in the affairs of First United Methodist Church for many years. She served as church secretary for several years, was a former president of United Methodist Women and member of the Dorothy Jackson Circle. She served as a volunteer with Maury Regional Hospital Auxilary and was a Super-Star. For many years she was a member of the Maury County Horsemen's Association. Mrs. Meek worked for a number of years as a medical secretary and retired from the Maury County Voter Registration Office in 1984. On August 13, 1942, she married James William "Bill" Meek, who preceded her in death December 20, 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Martha (Joe T.) Kelley of Cross Bridges and Olivia (Jimmy) Curry of Columbia; grandchildren, Beth Kelley Hamilton of Columbia, Dr. Joe T. (Melissa) Kelley, III of Sarasota, Florida, Amy Kelley of Brentwood, Daniel W. Kelley of Gallatin, Dana DeVitt (Jeff) Rummage of Columbia, and Brett DeVitt of Columbia; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Catherine Walton Latham of Columbia, Louise Meek Pedder of Michigan, and Ella Meek Beasley of Nashville; nieces in the local area, Cathy Latham (Mike) Cook and Beth Latham (Michael) White of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Wilkes Latham. Active pallbearers are Dr. Joe T. Kelley, III, Daniel W. Kelley, Brett DeVitt, Jeff Rummage, Michael White, and Mike Cook. Honorary pallbearers include Jimmy Ingrum, Jim McEwen, Tony Jamison, Judge Bobby Sands, Joe Delk, Maury County Mayor Jim Bailey, J. P. Due, Harold "Buddy" Kennedy, Dr. Carl C. Gardner, and Dr. William Fuqua.
