Fred Anderson Greer, 97, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Poplar Estates in Columbia, Tennessee. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 1:30 P.M. at Anderson-Stephenson Cemetery in the Shady Grove Community with Charlie Willis officiating. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements.The family suggests memorials be made to the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, 812 Nashville Highway, Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born June 4, 1920 in Williamsport, Tennessee, he was the son of the late George Rucker Greer and the late Elsie Anderson Greer. He was a 1938 graduate of Hickman County High School. Mr. Greer was a veteran of WWII. In September of 1941 he volunteered and served in the United States Allied Army Air Coprs seeing active duty in China-Burma-India of the Asian-Pacific theater until his honorable discharge in October 1945. After the war, he attended the Reppert School of Auctioneering and graduated in August of 1948. Mr. Greer's lifelong career then was a real estate broker and auctioneer in Maury County, as well as surrounding areas. He was a proud member of the American Veterans, a thirty-second degree mason, and also a long-time member of Graymere Church of Christ. He will be fondly remembered for his out-going, friendly personality, optimism, quick wit and love for his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Mary Blair Kennedy Greer of Columbia; daughters, Georgia Greer (Rick) Crawford of Hendersonville; Frieda Greer (Joel) Locke of Franklin; Elizabeth Blair Greer of Nashville; grandchildren, Richard (Niki) Crawford, Jr.; Elizabeth Locke (Joseph) Etherton; Joel Locke, Jr.; and great grandchildren, William Walker Etherton and Monroe Greer Etherton.He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Alma Greer Ledbetter.Active pallbearers will be Richard M. Crawford, Jr., Richard M. Crawford, Sr., Gary C. Ledbetter, Joel R. Locke, Jr., Joel R. Locke, Sr., and Gene Rummage. Honorary pallbearers include John Church, Ray Locke, Michael Lynch, Tracy Seiber, Randy Staggs, John Sweeney, Charlie Willis, and Richard Howell. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff and nurses at Poplar Estates for all their gracious care given to Mr. Greer.
