Fred Murry Young, 76, retired from the United States Postal Service and former Columbia City Police Officer, died Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Maury Regional Hospital.Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Donna Higginbotham officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War. He attended Columbia Business College for 3 years where he met his wife of 53 years, Jessie Belle Moody Young of Columbia. He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Karen Young Dobbs of Nashville and Vanessa Young (John) Colley of Columbia; brother, Carles G. (Mildred) Young of Columbia; sisters, Helen Ericsson of California, Faye Jones of Goodlettsville, and Juanita (W. L.) Boshers of Columbia; grandchildren, Brittany Leigh Dobbs, Rebecca "Hayley" Young Dobbs, Thomas Young "Tom" Colley, Dixie Emmaline "Emmy " Colley, and Samantha Carothers "Sam" Colley; several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by a sister, Tommie Young Bolton, two brothers, Glenn Young and J. B. Young; and a son-in-law, Chip Dobbs.Active pallbearers are John Colley, Jerry Young, Dennis Young, Steve Boshers, Bryan Jones, Tom Bolton, Pete Ridley, and Tom Colley. Honorary pallbearers are James Clark, Billy Church, Billy Ray King, David Warren, J. T. Johnson, Jimmy Bloss, Carles Young, Wayne Voss, Charles Mayse, Ted Lindsey, Frank Lindsey, and John Brown.
