Garland Dee Wherry, 84, resident of Columbia, died Monday, August 28, 2017 at Vanderbilt Medical Center. A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 3:00 P.M. at Rose Hill Cemetery with Eddie Rogers officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born March 4, 1933, in the Pleasantville Community of Hickman County, he was the son of the late Braden Colen Wherry and the late Virginia Chessor Wherry. Mr. Wherry proudly served four years in the U. S. Air Force and was stationed in the Philippines. He retired after many job responsibilities in his thirty-six-year employment with Textron Aerostructures in Nashville. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Wherry was very active and enjoyed fishing and hunting. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years whom he married April 1, 1954, Rebecca Frances Claud Wherry of Columbia; sons, Ronald Wherry of Texas and Darryl Wherry of Columbia; daughters, Therese Johnson of Columbia and Letizia Wherry of Florida; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Darryl Wherry, Peyton Wherry, Chris Wherry, Mikey Wherry, Tommy Wherry, and Kent Johnson.
