View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast Gary Lynn Goodwin, 71, former Maury County Sheriff and employee of the Convenience Center in Mt. Pleasant for the Maury County Solid Waste Department, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at his residence on Alicia Lane. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Chaplain Eddie Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Fraternal Order of Police, P.O. Box 891, Columbia, TN 38402. Notes of sympathy may be sent to oakesandnichols.com. Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia he was the son of the late Richard Nathan Goodwin and Eula Yvonne Freeman Goodwin. As a young man, he became interested in law enforcement and served as a deputy and later as Chief Deputy of the Maury County Sheriff's Deparment. Gary was elected Maury County Sheriff and served six years from 1970 to 1976. During that time, he was elected President of the Tennessee Sheriff's Association from 1974-1975. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Columbia Elks Lodge, former member of the Columbia Jaycees, and was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He served as constable of the First District of Maury County for several years. Survivors include his wife, Donna Temple Goodwin of Columbia; sister, Sue Ella Goodwin (Vernon) Cook of Milton; daughter, Bethany Ann (Ricky) Sewell of Leoma; step-daughter, Heidi (Steve) Mabry of Columbia; step-son, Robert (Sarah) Lake of Rineyville, Kentucky; grandchildren, Stephanie (David) Frye of Lawrenceburg, Austin Collier Mabry of Columbia, Lindsey Michelle Sewell of Leoma, Spencer Gage Mabry of Columbia, Nathaniel Carleton Lake and Samantha Leeann Lake of Rineyville, Kentucky; great-grandchild, Madyson Leigh Frye; and beloved basset hound, Hayleigh Trinity. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Lynn Goodwin. Active pallbearers are Austin Mabry, Vernon Cook, Ricky Sewell, Steve Mabry, Tom Wilson, Andy Anderson, Andrew Scott, and Ricky Patton. Members of the Fraternal Order of Police will serve as honorary pallbearers.
