George Edward Turner, 80, retired long-time employee of Shapard Lumber Company and resident of Fleming Street, died Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Centennial Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Blythe officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born February 13, 1938 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Cleo Turner and the late Lucille Roberts Turner. Mr. Turner loved to work, and for seven years worked for Maury County Solid Waste. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, horseback riding, sports, and drinking coffee at McDonald’s. He was a member of First Assembly of God. Survivors include his wife, whom he married November 17, 1956, Joy Allen Turner of Columbia; son, Eddie (Amanda) Turner of Murfreesboro; sister, Ola Mae Simbeck of Athens; grandson, Tyler (Brittany) Turner of Algood; granddaughter, Cayce Turner (Devon) Wallace of Murfreesboro; and great grandchildren, Brycen Turner; Bella Turner; and Aubrey Turner. He was preceded in death by his siblings, C.W. Turner; Mable Turner; Paul Turner; and Jerry Turner. Active pallbearers will be Tyler Turner, Devon Wallace, Dennis Turner, Mark Turner, Don Allen, Mike Allen, and Wade Allen. Honorary pallbearers include Dewey Brady, C.T. Johnson, Alan Arnold, and past and present members of Prime Timers at First Assembly of God in Columbia.
