Mr. George Edward Williams, III, 78, retired longtime employee of Monsanto, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at his residence on Cole Bend Road in the Hardison Mill Community. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30p.m. Wednesday, at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Altrogge officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 5 - 8p.m. and Wednesday from 1 - 3:30p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Gideon Memorial Bible, P.O. The Maury County native was the son of the late George Edward Williams, Jr. and Edna Pipkin Williams. He was married to Brownie Mayberry Williams who preceded him in death April 25, 1983. Mr. Williams served in the United States Navy onboard the U.S.S. Murphy during World War II stationed in Japan and the Pacific Theatre. He was a 38 year employee of Monsanto Chemical Co. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing, and collecting antique tools. Mr. Williams was a member of the Columbia Seventh Day Adventist Church. He is survived by a brother, Charles Jerry (Jean) Williams of Charles Town, West Virginia; a step-son, John Hartling of Columbia; sister-in-law, Mildred McKennon Williams of Columbia; two brothers-in-law, Walter Jewell and Doug Mayberry both of Columbia; ten nieces and nephews, Linda Oliver, Paul "Roscoe" Williams, David London Williams, Pam Williams Stanley, Walter Jewell, Jr., Betty Slonecker, Tommy Mayberry, Charlie Mayberry, Mary Owens, Faye Oliver; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friend, Evelyn Cook of Columbia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Hamlin Williams, and a niece Deborah Diane Williams. Pallbearers will be Tony Oliver, Tim Oliver, Tim Owens, Jim Dodson, Richard Keith, Walter Jewell, Jr., and Charlie Mayberry. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert G. Newsum, David Williams, Edward Dodson, Hardees and McDonalds Coffee Drinkers, retired employees of Monsanto, and the Hardison Mill Campground Community.
