View Video TributesView Funeral Webcast Hal D Shiarla, 62, retired employee of General Motors and resident of Jewell Drive, died Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Box 1864, Columbia, TN 38402, or Trinity Lutheran Church, 5001 Trotwood Avenue, Columbia, TN 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Napoleon, Ohio, he was the son of Helen E. Baughman Shiarla of Napoleon, Ohio and the late Raymond Jacob Shiarla. He was a graduate of Malinta-Grelton High School in Malinta, Ohio and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Mr. Shiarla began his career with General Motors at the Central Foundry in Defiance, Ohio. He relocated to Columbia with the startup of Saturn in Spring Hill and retired as Senior Manufacturing Engineer after thirty-five years service. He was an avid baseball player and enjoyed gardening and doing rock work. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he served as elder, treasurer and did carpentry work at the church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of forty years, Janey Shaw Miller Shiarla of Columbia; two daughters, Jennifer Shiarla of Murfreesboro; Laura Hughes of Manchester; one son, Jacob R (Delynn) Shiarla of Murfreesboro; six grandchildren, Jordan Newman, J. C. Newman, Kristina Hughes, Leah Hughes, Jay Shiarla, Rainey Shiarla; and one brother, Tim (Bert) Shiarla of Defiance, Ohio. Pallbearers will be Mike Rowe, Mike Uggla, Jeremy Prince, Charlie Kurtz, Denny Kurtz, Hoppy Sickmiller, Bill Tocco, and Jeff Southworth.
