View Funeral Webcast View Video Tribute Harry David Underwood, 90, retired Teacher, Principal, and Coach for Santa Fe School, Culleoka Unit School, and Spring Hill School, died Friday, February 17, 2023 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend N.J. Pope officiating. Burial will follow in Lynnwood Cemetery with military honors provided by Giles County Honor Guard.The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. -7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Born March 10, 1932 in the Frye Branch Community of Giles County, he was the son of the late William Thomas Underwood and the late Edna McCord Underwood. On December 29, 1959, he married Wilma Faye Russell Underwood who preceded him in death August 17, 2014. Mr. Underwood was a 1950 graduate of Jones High School in Lynnville. He attended Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, earned his Master’s degree in Education from Peabody College in 1955 and his plus 45 degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Before being drafted in the United States Army in 1955-1957 during the Korean War, he taught at Santa Fe School. After being discharged, he taught at Spring Hill School and coached basketball and football. Mr. Underwood finished his teaching career as Principal for 23 years at Culleoka Unit School. A very devoted Christian, he was a member of Lynnville United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School Classes. He enjoyed farming, gardening, and, earlier in life, quail hunting and was a self-taught musician that enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. Survivors include his daughters, Kimberly Dawn (Larry) Love of Culleoka; Karen Anita Weber of Nolensville; Karla Kaye Underwood of Nashville; Kristen Faye (Scott) Neu of Nolensville; grandchildren, Jason (Justine) Smith, Bennett Neu, Ian Weber, Harris Neu, Maya Underwood, Carsyn Underwood, Megan Weber, and Kathryn Underwood; sisters-in-law, Wilda Underwood, Dot Musgrove, Vonda Russell, and Shirley Russell; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Emily Grace Weber; sister, Elizabeth Brannon; and brothers, W.T. Underwood and Wayne Underwood. Active pallbearers will be Scott Neu, Ian Weber, Bennett Neu, Harris Neu, Jeff Smithson, and Glenn Brannon. Honorary pallbearers include members of Lynnville United Methodist Church.
