Heather Elizabeth Betts Bazzel, M.D., 36, Internal Medicine Specialist and resident of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, November 1, 2004 at Vanderbilt Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday at The First United Methodist Church in Columbia with Rev. Bernard Strickland officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elephant Sanctuary, P. O. Box 393, Hohenwald, TN 38462. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, Dr. Bazzel was a 1986 graduate of Grace King High School in Metairie, Louisiana. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of South Alabama and earned her M.D. Degree there in 1996. She completed an Internal Medicine Residency at the University of South Alabama and had been an Internal Medicine Specialist in Columbia since 1999. Dr. Bazzel was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Benefit Ball Board and a member of the Board of the Maury County Benefit Ball. She served as Chair of the Peer Review Committee at Maury Regional Hospital and was on the Medical Executive Committee at Maury Regional Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Judd Bazzel of Mt. Pleasant; father and stepmother, Peter J. & Patricia Betts of Mandeville, Louisiana; mother and stepfather, Penny Park & Dan Philips of Pensacola, Florida; brother, Michael Philips of Jacksonville, Florida; two step-brothers, Brian Lusher of Washington, D.C.; Greg (Audrey) Lusher of Round Rock, Texas; step grandmother, Sarah Bacino Halasz of Mandeville, Louisiana; mother-in-law and step father-in-law, Judy & Thomas Hodges of Mobile, Alabama; and grandfather-in-law, Bernard Strickland of Enterprise, Alabama.
