Helen Morgan Brunson, age 95, longtime resident of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at her home.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jeff Morgan and Mike Eagle officiating. Following the service, she will be laid to rest in Arlington Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. A visitation will be held on Saturday at 1:00 PM, immediately preceding the funeral service.

Helen was born on December 4, 1928 in Mt. Pleasant to the late Thomas Herman Sr. and Lucile Morgan and was a 1946 graduate of Summertown High School, where she was a member of the Beta Club. After high school she worked for the historic Werthan Bag Company in Nashville before returning to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1956. She was later admitted to the first on-campus nursing program at Columbia State Community College, graduating as a Registered Nurse. She earned numerous advanced critical care certifications, serving her community as a nurse for 42 years. After retiring, she enjoyed long walks around her neighborhood, collecting antiques, caring for her yard, watching college and Titans football with her son, attending her grandchildren’s numerous activities, and feeding the many birds, squirrels, and cats that came by to visit.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Brunson; sister, Juanita Henson; brother, Wayne Morgan; daughter-in-law, Janice White; brother-in-law, Ross Henson; and sister-in-law, Joyce Morgan.

Helen leaves to cherish her memory, her son, James White of Columbia; daughter, Embry (Tracy) Nichols of Franklin; brother, Thomas Herman Morgan Jr. of Philadelphia, TN; granddaughter, Morgan Nichols (Cody Matthews) of Brentwood; grandson, Will Nichols of Nashville; great grandson, Sage Matthews; great grandson Rowen Matthews on the way; sister-in-law, Dimple Morgan; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that were very dear to her. She also leaves behind special friends Agnes Duke, Anne Nichols, Billie Heck, Pam Youngblood, and Patti Hawkins.

Pallbearers will be Tracy Nichols, Will Nichols, Jerry Henson, Zain Hashmi, Mike Hunt, Cody Matthews, and Calum Morgan, along with honorary pallbearer David Henson.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Kym Hill of Columbia, and the other nurses and staff of Alive Hospice for their wonderful care of Helen.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Jude or the organization of your choice. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.
