View Funeral WebcastHerbert Coleman Church, Sr., 88, retired employee of Union Carbide, died Saturday at his residence in Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Carl May officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born March 21, 1929 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Herbert Jones Church and the late Elizabeth Coleman Church. He was a 1948 graduate of Columbia Central High School where he was a member of the football team. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War; and in 1952, he was a Purple Heart recipient of The Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. Mr. Church was a thirty-one-year employee of Union Carbide and retired as supervisor in 1991. Following his retirement, he was employed at Maury County Convenience Center for twenty years. He loved raising quarter horses and trail riding with his friends. He had a devoted love for his pets, especially his dog and constant companion "Susie". He was a former member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Mr. Church was a member of the Church of Christ and attended Berea Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Julie H. Cutter Church of Columbia; sons, Herbert C. "Herbie" (Sherri) Church, William C. "Bill" (Jan) Church, and John H. (Brenda) Church, all of Columbia; step-sons, Mark (Geraldine) Amis of Shady Grove Community and Barry (Robyn) Cutter of Cody, Wyoming; step daughters, Nanette (Christopher) Jones of Louisville, Kentucky and Betsy (Jeff) Wenn of Columbia; brother, John M. Church of Columbia; grandchildren, Herbie Church, Josh (Melissa) Church, Corey (Tara) Church, Joey (Leigh Anne) Church, Justin (Blaine) Church, Kelli Church (Todd) Glenn; seven step grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; niece, Mallory Church of Nashville; nephew, John Michael (Debbie) Church of Columbia; and several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Ann Carter Bills Church, and his second wife, Willadean Wright Amis Church. Pallbearers will be Herbie Church, Josh Church, Corey Church, Joey Church, Justin Church, and Sheriff Bucky Rowland. Honorary pallbearers will include Jimmy Pantall, Ron Sharp, and retired employees of Union Carbide. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Dr. Heather Steele and her staff, and the nurses and staff of Hospice Compassus.
