Mr. Hershel "Hut" White, 96, long-time Columbia businessman, civic activist and resident of Sixth Avenue, died Friday, February 10, 2006 at Madison Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Elmer Lusk and Jack White officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Clifton White and Emma Skelley White. He was educated in Maury County schools and a long-time member of the former Riverside Church of Christ. Mr. White owned and operated White Brothers Auto Salvage & Wrecker Service for many years. He was a foreman for the Maury County Highway Department for several years and later served as the first manager of the Maury County Landfill. He served as 5th Ward Commissioner for the City of Columbia from 1974 to 1979. He was a member of the Columbia Elks Club, Maury County Civil Defense and Fraternal Order of Police. He was married December 23, 1928 to the former Margie Huckaby. Mrs. White died December 27, 2000. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sandra Hickman White of Hendersonville; a sister, Rachel Johnson of Columbia; four grandchildren, Danny White of Columbia, David White of Greenbrier, Debbie Terry of Columbia and Karen Mills of Hendersonville; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Willis White; six sisters, Marguerite Davis, Frances Powell, Hautie Randolph, Hattie Mai Nicholson, Bertha Loftin and Emmie Huckaby; five brothers, Elbert White, Fred White, Bob White, C. W. White and Early White. Grandsons and nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Elders of Northview Church of Christ and former employees of the City of Columbia and Maury County.
