Mr. Horace Mathews Sparks, 86, resident of Claremont Dr., died Sunday, May 3, 2009 at St. Thomas Medical Center. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 5 - 7 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Flanner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Indianapolis, Indiana with Pastor John Dunaway officiating. Burial will be in Washington Park North in Indianapolis. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Flanner-Buchanan Funeral Home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Jackson County, Indiana native was the son of the late John Sparks and Leva Mathews Sparks. On December 24, 1948 he married Geneva Woodruff Sparks who preceded him in death June 12, 2005. He was a graduate of Crothersville High School in Jackson County, Indiana and received his Associate Degree in Electricity in Chicago. He was a 60 year member of I.B.E.W. Local 481 in Indianapolis. Mr. Sparks served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was stationed in the European Theater where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Sparks enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing. Survivors include a son, Norman (Theresa) Sparks of Columbia; two grandchildren, Michael (Eraca) Sparks, Michele Sparks (Donald) Clark of Spring Lake, North Carolina; and two great-grandchildren, Josalyn Sparks and Savannah Sparks both of Spring Hill. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Sparks in 1970, a brother, Ronald Sparks and two sisters, Helen Sparks and Ruth Winters. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
